Company information

Malcolm and Lyn are the owners of Kukupa Heights, home of Akaroa Lavender. Kukupa is an alternative name for the native pigeon or kereru. At various times of the year, kukupa can be found in flocks of 10-20 enjoying our regenerating native forest. We manage four accommodations on this property: Kūkupa Matairangi (lookout of the native pigeon) is our purpose-built glamping hut high up on the hill at the top of the farm with stunning views down Akaroa Harbour. Sleeps 2 adults. Lavender Cottage is our original haybarn, now fully restored as a cottage featuring macrocarpa wood milled from the farm. It is adjacent to the lavender fields and sleeps four adults. Kūkupa Puni (camp of the native pigeon) and Kūkupa Taunga (resting place of the native pigeon), are our purpose-built tiny homes provided by Tiny Away. Both have amazing views of Akaroa harbour. Both sleep 2 adults. As well as managing the accommodation we also run Akaroa Lavender. The lavender farm is over 1.5 acres with around 5,000 plants of two species. As well as the main lavender farm we are developing our 50 shades of purple garden - 50 different lavender a taste of the over 450 varieties around the world. In our previous lives, we have worked extensively in conservation, tourism, marketing and sales - both nationally and internationally. You can expect a strong theme of kaitiakitanga (conservation) and outstanding manaakitanga (hospitality) from us throughout your stay. Above all, we see our role as facilitating the opportunity for you to slow down, relax and breathe deeply….

Neighbourhood information

Akaroa Lavender perched in Duvauchelle, a waterfront town offering peaceful views over the sea and is 10-15 minutes away from the historic seaside region of Akaroa or Akaroa and the Bay. Originally known as Kaitouna, Duvauchelle is a small French town situated at the head of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula, known to entrance visitors with its historic buildings, bustling harbour, and fine food. Our local recommendations: Food scene - The Duvauchelle Bar and Bistro ( 5 minutes drive away) is a local drinking hole by the sea. - The Common in Akaroa (12 minutes drive away) is our favourite place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. - Akaroa Fish & Chips (12 minutes drive away) is popular for its authentic New Zealand fish and chips by the waterfront in Akaroa. - French Farm Estate (about 10 minutes’ drive away) serves food with a stunning sea view surrounded by vibrant green hills while dining in a rose terrace garden. Sightseeing - Akaroa Golf Course (five minutes’ drive away) - Akaroa Harbour lies in the heart of an ancient volcano, with a bay full of exciting nature excursions, food and views. - Akaroa Dolphins in Akaroa provide an up-close encounter with Hector’s dolphins, a local treasure to the shallow waters of Akaroa. - Onawe Peninsula (ten minutes drive away) is the plug of the ancient volcano in Duvauchelle and hosts magnificent views and walking trails around. Access is best at low tide. - The Giants House in Akaroa, New Zealand, is a celebrated attraction known for its whimsical mosaic sculptures set amidst enchanting gardens. It also serves as a unique bed and breakfast experience. - Hinewai Reserve around twenty minutes’ drive away is a privately owned nature reserve that is open to the public.
