Tekapo is the perfect base for exploring New Zealand tourist attractions further afield, like Twizel (40 minutes from Tekapo), Ohau Ski Field (1 hour 30 minutes) and Aoraki Mount Cook (1 hour 10 minutes). It’s on the main highway between the cities of Christchurch and Queenstown, both equipped with international airports, and one hour from Timaru, Tekapo’s nearest airport.
