The Rock sits high above the Pacific Ocean and offers birds eye views of wilderness , sea and sky. At night, if your are lucky , you will see some of the clearest of views into the southern sky, the milky way , and beyond.
The holiday home is simple and petite, absolutely private, and exceptional in many respects. The decor is comfortable and modern, and your bedding, new and extremely comfortable. The kitchen offers an easy and workable facility to base yourselves for the duration of your stay, with a no fuss, modest bathroom and laundry room. It's all there, just very chill and simple. A Sleepout has a single bed for 'Groups of 5' only.
The deck overlooking the ocean and Mercury Islands is a favorite space with all guests and you will spent your days there, or bathing and walking the beaches near by. This is a place to stay and relax, read a book, walk, talk and love. Morning chorus is spectacular with the area of Tuatewawa , the location you are in , being within one of the Coromandel Peninsula's habitat protected areas, so New Zealand's more endangered and rare birds are able to thrive. Kaka, Bellbird and Kiwi are about.
The best beaches are Little Bay and Waikawau , both great swimming beaches, and Kennedy Bay is a big white sandy beach as well. Theses beaches are about 6 kms from The Rock. One of Coromadel's Top 10 walks is just up the road from The Rock . Turn right as you exit the gateway and you'll find the start of the track about a 5 minute walk away. The track descends to a rocky foreshore through wonderful bush and a nikau forest and will take 30 minutes down and 45 minutes back up. This walk is not for the faint hearted and you are advised to take liquid refreshments.
The day trip to Colville and up the western coast to Fletcher Bay is stunning. The eastern coast road to Stony Bay is equally stunning. These are metal roads and take you to the more picturesque and wild parts of the upper tip of the Coromandel. Driving Creek Railway is a must!
I am a Kiwi , come from Titirangi in Auckland, and am happily retired , having spent 30 plus years working as an architect here and abroad. I bought The Rock quite recently and could see in it fine detailing and clever planning, and an ease with which it sits within its epic landscape, and if you were to stay here you will see what I am referring to. I am presently planting up the garden and surrounds with native plants and grasses , with the intention of settling the house even further into the landscape.
There is no fun parlors, bingo halls , pubs or lollipop outlets in Tuateawa, or indeed within a 30 minute drive, so come prepared to amuse yourselves. You're here for the isolation , the serenity and the good food and wine you have brought with you. Bring your own cafe , because the nearest , 'The Hereford and a Pickle' is in Colville. The Rock is one of many small houses spread along the length Waihirere Drive over looking the sea from a great height, and yet tucked into the landscape.
