The Coromandel is one of the most beautiful areas of New Zealand and a place of many contrasts. It has golden sandy beaches, hot pools, extremely rugged native bush and mountain ranges, historic timber trails and gold workings, safe swimming, boating and fishing, skin-diving, snorkelling and all types of water sports. Another major attraction is the new cycleway section from Thames to Waihi through the amazing Karangahake Gorge including the historical 1.2km train tunnel. Easily accessible as it is less than 500 mtrs from Thorold Country House. Thames is a well-appointed town for the Coromandel Peninsula, a perfect place to stay while exploring the region with its interesting cafes, restaurants, art galleries and craft shops. In particular is the local market on Saturday mornings full of local arts, crafts, produce etc. The drive along the coast road north is stunning and the Waimou Kauri Walk is one of the best in NZ. Thames is within 70 minutes of Auckland International Airport, an hour from Hamilton or Tauranga and a scenic 2½ hour drive to Rotorua.
