Barragem de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Reservoir) A 30-minute drive south-west will take you to the Santa Clara dam and reservoir – one of the largest lakes in the region. It’s a beautiful spot for a picnic, walking, or even swimming in summer. There are a couple of scenic viewpoints and a floating pool near the Santa Clara-a-Velha village. Great for nature lovers and bird watching. Castro da Cola Archaeological Site About 15 km from the house, this site features ruins of an ancient settlement dating back to pre-Roman and Moorish times. There’s a walking trail through the ruins and a small chapel Nossa Senhora da Cola nearby. The area is peaceful and steeped in history. You can drive up close and then walk the marked paths. Vila Nova de Milfontes If you crave a beach day, the coastal town of Vila Nova de Milfontes is roughly a 45-minute drive southwest. There you can enjoy sandy beaches and the Mira River. Another option is Zambujeira do Mar (about 1 hour away) – known for its dramatic cliffs and lovely beach. These make fantastic day trips. Pack a cooler and umbrella (available at the house) and enjoy the Atlantic! Hiking and Nature The area around Santa Luzia is great for walking. You can wander the country lanes and cork oak groves starting right outside the property. For a more organized hike, the Rota Vicentina trails approach the coastal areas, and Via Algarviana trails start around Almodôvar (30 min drive east). Bring water and a hat if you hike; the sun can be strong. Algarve Day Trip Monte Courela da Alameda is about a 50-minute drive from the Algarve region. You could consider a day trip to Albufeira or Vilamoura to experience the southern coast’s beaches and attractions. Just an idea if you’re staying longer and want to explore further afield. Ourique The town of Ourique (21 km away) offers historical charm and modern conveniences. Visit the Ourique Castle ruins and viewpoint on the hill – the site of the legendary Battle of Ourique (12th century). The
