Growing up in the northern Netherlands, Bart found his heart's true home in Sweden during family holidays. He was utterly charmed by the country's natural beauty, the genuine warmth of its people, and its unique culture. An internship at a sawmill in central Sweden further cemented this bond. The moment his children were independent, Bart made the courageous leap, choosing a life in Sweden. He now thrives as a handyman, frequently lending his skills to a campsite on Öland, in addition to managing his B&B and caring for his beloved animals. Always approachable, Bart enjoys nothing more than sharing stories and listening to the adventures of his guests.
Allemanshem is in the middle of the kingdom of Glass.
Nestled deep within the forests of Småland, Sweden, lies a captivating region known as the "Glasriket" – the Kingdom of Glass. This unique area, between Växjö and Kalmar, isn't just a place; it's a living testament to a centuries-old craft that has shaped the very identity of this part of Sweden.
The story of glassmaking here began in 1742 with the establishment of Kosta Glasbruk. The abundant forests provided the necessary fuel for the fiery furnaces, and the local sand, though needing some refinement, was a readily available raw material. Over the centuries, more glassworks sprang up, transforming a tranquil rural landscape into a hub of artistry and industry. At its peak in the late 19th century, Småland boasted dozens of glass factories, giving rise to the name "Kingdom of Crystal."
What truly sets the Glass Kingdom apart is the opportunity for visitors to step directly into the "hot shops" – the warm, vibrant heart of the glassworks. Here, you can witness master glassblowers transforming molten glass into breathtaking creations, feeling the intense heat and admiring their incredible skill.
Beyond the mesmerizing dance of fire and glass, the Glass Kingdom offers a tapestry of experiences. You can explore museums, browse factory outlets for unique souvenirs, or delve into the broader cultural heritage of Småland. The surrounding nature, with its deep forests and shimmering lakes, invites activities like hiking, cycling, and even moose safaris. Traditional "hyttsill" (hot-shop herring) meals, cooked in the cooling ovens after the day's work, offer a taste of local history and flavor.
The Glass Kingdom is more than just a collection of glass factories; it's a vibrant blend of industrial heritage, artistic innovation, and the enduring spirit of Småland. It's a place where the past sparkles in every handcrafted piece and the traditions of generations continue to shine.
