Spinalonga — island near Elounda, Crete.
Spinalonga — island near Elounda, Crete. Historically interesting (Venetian fortress, Ottoman rule, leper colony until 1957), now a tourist spot. Boat trip for 2: €24, entrance: €40 — total €64. Consider it support for the local economy. We didn’t find the island worth visiting — it would have been enough to see it from afar. The boat ride was nice, but overall, the trip is overpriced. It was a great place to go by boat to see but there isn’t any guide to help understand the history or what exactly the buildings/rooms were. Some signage but only have an hour so you can’t see it all in that time. We hustled around the place not really reading much so we could see more but still missed a lot. Absolutely disappointing.
Absolutely disappointing. A beautiful island from afar, but left to destruction. Thousands visit the island every month, but the money earned with it goes not to the upkeep of the island. It has tremendous potential as a destination, for a good museum, restaurants, even performances at night. As it is now, it is falling apart.Guest review byDanielNetherlands

Perfect location for the town centre with multiple bars, restaurants and supermarkets and close enough for a nice stroll to the local beaches. The outstanding feature is the view across the bay to Spinalonga from the spacious balcony. Ilianna, the owner is always available should you need anything and takes a pride in keeping her guests happy. She is amazing. She left us a welcome pack with fruit, bread and wine which was such a nice touch after a long drive. The location of the apartment is perfect to explore Elounda, Plaka and Spinalonga. Just a short stroll to restaurants and the the beach. The balcony is perfect to sit and watch the boats go by with a lime tree right outside. Great location with views to spinalonga island. Staff are beyond friendly. We stayed in a bungalow and it was perfect. We went for the half board option, great selection from three restaurants. We especially loved the Asian restaurant. Great cocktails at both beach bar and hotel bar.
