Hands down, this was the most traditional ryokan experience one can have in Japan. It was perfect. Transport: There is a shuttle pickup from Kiso-Fukushima at 330 or 5pm, then drop off departing the hotel at 930am. Food: The dinner and breakfast were incredible, we were treated to a 9 course kaiseke while watching Mt. Ontake, and the most comprehensive shabu shabu for breakfast. The homemade blueberry jam was a bonus! Facilities: Free flow alcohol - wine, beer, juice, tea etc. Separate lounge for free flow sake and whisky. Perfect ambience. The onsen has four pools each, including 2 outdoors in nature - at night this is just serene. Rooms: Traditional Japanese style tatami, with plenty of bathroom amenities. There is a private spa on the balcony, where one can relax and do some bird watching. Overall, I can’t rate this ryokan enough. Thank you for the most pleasant stay, we will definitely come back during winter!

The rate per night is reasonable for the location and inclusions. The staff were warm and helpful. There was a bit of a concern with my luggage delivery to the airport, but they were quick to assist. Breakfast and dinner are included with the room. Few options for breakfast, but the dinner selections were all delicious and filling. The 24-hour drink bar is also a huge plus. The single room is a little dated but it's spacious and comfortable. There is an ensuite sink which is convenient. The onsen is nice. It was always clean whenever I used it. I stayed for five (5) nights and had it to myself most of the time.

It was easy to locate the place with the on-board computer in the car. We were welcome with hot tea and sweets in our room. The room was huge and we had two separate sleeping areas. The large bathroom came with a wooden tub for in-room ofuru and also two other separate toilets. A small kitchen was available but we did not cook or made any food as dinner was provided. The dinner was meant for a king which we found difficulty completing the full sumptous & luxurious course. Next morning, the breakfast provided was equally good! We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor ofuru too! We will return to this beautiful place if we travel to Nagano again!

The staff was incredibly helpful and picked us up outside of their shuttle-bus departures. The facilities were beautiful and the hot-spring bath inside and outside were stunning. Highly recommended!

All properties with onsen in Kiso

Looking for a property with onsen?

Featuring traditional Japanese hot springs known as "onsen," these hotels offer a relaxing soak in therapeutic, geothermal waters. Traditionally onsens were located outdoors, but a number of hotels now offer indoor facilities for private or shared use. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with "kuroyu" black water famous for its positive effects on skin.

Wonderful staff members, really friendly and memorable! They catered to my dietary so well which was so appreciated and a difficult thing to find in Japan, can be hard to not eat meat. Loved the private onsen experience, we did the star tour too which was really cute, and went for a late night dip in the main onsens (women’s one was empty so it was amazing to have it completely to myself!). Overall a really wonderful part of our trip.

Awesome stay here. It's in a beautiful setting. All the people were warm, attentive, and helpful. Fast and friendly shuttle from/to train station. Dinner was incredible - a creative menu, executed really well. Breakfast was also excellent. I also appreciated the very nice indoor+outdoor onsen. I hoped to take the night stars tour but clouds didn't cooperate. Would love to stay again.

Very friendly and helpful staff in the hotel and restaurant. Room was nice- traditional tatami, with a painting of a Nakanorisan on the wall. The rooftop onsen was lovely. Everything was very clean. The food at the restaurant was amazing- Traditional Kaiseki. Excellent waitstaff.

The whole experience of staying at a ryokan for first time. Onsen so pampering after 2 days of flying/sitting on trains. Japanese dinners scrumptious and exquisitely presented. To return to our traditional Japanese room after such a dinner to find cosy futons laid out was simply heaven. Staff warm and caring. A perfect ryokan from which to explore magical old Nakasendo trail towns.

The staff were very helpful and gave great local recommendations for places to visit around town. The onsen was fantastic, everything was provided and the temperature was perfect. We were walking a few sections of the Nakasendo trail and this was a great place to rest. There’s a local hot spring foot bath close by which was perfect to soak our feet after a long day of walking - with the added bonus of enjoying ice cream and a view!

This was a lovely traditional Japanese ryokan. The outdoor onsen was beautiful and so peaceful in nature. The free stargazing tour was wonderful and the guide was so knowledgeable. The food included was delicious and generous, and it was nice to taste so many different Japanese foods. We were picked up and dropped off at the train station, included in the room rate. The ryokan is in a nice quiet location, but only a short journey from the station. The staff were very friendly.

In short, everything. But I particularly loved all the meals provided by the ryokan. The onsen was great, but with the ryokan being situated practically in the woods, I would love an even closer to nature setting of the outdoor onsen.

Mr. Koike and his Wife was very welcoming. He even picked us up from Tsumago-Juku. The Dinner and the Breakfast was just amazing. The room has a balcony with a view to the waterfall. The private onsen was very clean and relaxing. Would come again for sure. Best regards from Austria :)
