Liege was disappointing. It was untidy with a scruffy feel. Many homeless people and drug taking in plain sight. No taxis at the railway station 'security'. You go online for one and the then meet up under a big advert on the other side of the canal. Difficult to find places to eat. The Charleroi airport 'South Brussels'/Ryanair is famously dreadful. I would never use it again - there is a proper one in Brussels. Fortunately the hotel advised us to get there 3 hours early. A very decent destination for a weekend in its own right, it can also serve as a base for things like battlefield exploration (Waterloo, the WW1 Western Front, some of Marlborough's campaigns). If you choose to make it a base for car trips, remember to set your SatNav to "avoid motorways" - it's beautiful countryside if you stick to the smaller roads. I detected no 'edge' to the place at all, no bad behaviour, no vagrants or beggars. This matters since it's a lovely place to explore entirely on foot. A little gem of Ardennes with little streets peppered with fancy bars, restaurants and shops. Good both for a one-day trip and for a longer stay. Nice nature around, and a paradise for kayaking.
