I thought to myself that such a hotel must be an outstanding hotel, and indeed I was right. A very High class hotel with prices of an economical one. Your buck goes a long way in terms of: location quality, cleanliness, facilities, comfort, staff and free internet. From the moment you enter you feel luxury, the staff is amazing!! And it is clear that the hotel has a very high standarts of service, the staff really goes out of their way to give you the best experience, and it is clear that the guest's satisfaction is the top priority of the staff. It starts from Galiana at the reception. Carlos - in the dining room Elisabel - the coffee queen... And most of all the manager, Ishmael - What a charming guy, humble, full of kindness, personal charm and willingness to help. We stayed at the hotel for a week, and felt like family. Besides the great attitude, the hotel is beautiful, the service consciousness is very high, the rooms were also large, spacious and clean, and well equipped. There are two wonderful pools. Excellent restaurants - where there is a variety of food and exquisite service. The hotel is in a superb location; 10 minutes drive from the airport, and close to the city center - to all restaurants, travel agencies, shops, and in front of a bank, where there is also an ATM machine. In short, an unforgettable experience. And to top it all off, since we missed a flight, and had to purchase new plane tickets for the next evening - they allowed us to check out in the evening at no extra cost. Mocagua is a little paradise on the Amazon river and La Ceiba is a perfect base to soak it in and explore the area. Maria arranged a guide for us (he met us in Leticia - it’s quite awkward to get to boat terminal etc so having someone local made it a lot easier, his name was Romain and was brilliant). Loads of activities to do and the food was simple but delicious- if you are hungry between meals can go and grab a fresh sweet mango that has fallen off a tree! Rooms are basic (no air con and limited electricity) but this adds to the authenticity of the experience. They helped us organize the boat to get to Reserva and back to Leticia. We did several additional tours with them, exploring the Amazon jungle and the surroundings. They care deeply about local communities. Food was great, two of us were vegans and they adjusted all meals for us so it wasn't an issue. The non-vegan part of our group was also extremely pleased with food, especially with the fish, served in a variety of ways. It is a quiet place, you get to connect with other travelers. After a long travel to reach Leticia, I would highly recommend spending a night or two in town before heading out on the river. Amazing little town in the jungle.
Amazing little town in the jungle. Get out of Leticia asap and stay there. There are no cars or motorcycles. Only foot traffic on perfectly paved paths. Leticia is very safe and friendly, with plenty of stores, restaurants, bars, cafes, and more. There are plenty of police, soldiers, and coast guard. We walked from the airport to our downtown hotel, but the sidewalks and roads are rough. There are many inexpensive taxis, tuk-tuks, and even moto taxis (motorcycles). July 2022. A special place. Great relaxed vibe. Locals friendly. Very safe to walk around. I’d recommend 3-4 nights to get full experience. Lots of cheap hostel options. We stayed at Refugio Maiku - recommended, but one the pricier options (US$25/day for a private room with b/r). A handful of options to eat. Most restaurants are clustered in one area. Margarita is biggest and has a good lunch buffet (US$5). Dona Luz and Rogelio (cheapest) are also recommended. At night, there is a parrilla in the street where you can get cheap eats. There are a couple of basic grocery stores facing the river where you get water, beer and other essentials. One is open until 11pm. Most tours (“actividades”) you’ll want a guide. Depending on the water level, the tours are very different. I’d recommend a night hike the first day you arrive. Tarapoto is a must. The trip to San Antonio reserva on the Peruvian side and hike to a ginormous tree is also beautiful. We didn’t have time to go, but heard great things about the hike in Parque Natural Amacayacu. Each tour we did was between $12 -$25 but can vary based on group size. When you arrive, you can go to the information booth and get a map and information on tours. You can walk on your own to the Wochine reservation on your own (25 minutes) and see the pirarucu and caimans. You can also walk to Altos de Aguila and see monkeys and parrots (15-20 minutes) Lots of people will offer to be your guide, but best to find someone recommended beforehand or to ask at your hostel. Brandon was our guide for a few tours and is recommended. Tickets for the ferry back to Leticia is behind the malecon.
