Romantic Region of Castles and Christmas Markets

Home to some of the world’s oldest and finest Christmas markets, Bavaria is the German region touching Lake Constance and the Austrian and Czech borders. Although evoking images of beer, lederhosen and fairytale castles, it’s much, much more than that.

Famous for Oktoberfest, its capital Munich has impressive architecture lining squares and parks, and several luxury Bavaria hotels on Booking.com. To the north, Nuremberg is a city of 2 halves: a picture-postcard old town and grandiose Nazi rally grounds housing a sensitive museum.

With a stately palace and gardens, Erlangen is on the Regnitz River which continues to beautiful Bamberg where one of the half-timbered buildings hovers above the flowing river. Bayreuth is well-known for opera performances of Wagner, a former resident, while Regensburg on the Danube River has a beautiful, medieval centre.

Unsurprisingly, most romantic Bavaria hotels are on the Romantic Road between Würzburg, with its hilltop castle, and Füssen in the foothills of the Alps. This hotel is pristine clean, the facilities wonderful, and a lovely location right on the side of the lake. However, what makes the hotel even more wonderful is the staff; they were incredibly friendly and accommodating, delivering an excellent customer service throughout our stay. I think this is more appreciated as we were English and spoke hardly any German, and it was a predominantly German hotel (as we expected). This was the first stop on our Honeymoon, and they were wonderful on upgrading our room so that it had views of both the mountains and the lake, adding rose petals on the bed, they decorated the table formally for our first dinner, and as a farewell they gave us a bottle of sparkling wine. I particular want to identify two members of staff who were particularly lovely ; Lara who was on reception and greeted us to the hotel was very nice and made us feel very welcome. And Sören, who we believe was the restaurant manager, and who looked after us on both evening meals, and whose customer service was outstanding, ensuring we were comfortable the entire time.

I found Munich interesting. The Youth Hostel was at a walking distance from the Cathedral, Old Town and other areas. Eating places were also available along the way. The Metro station too was at a walking distance.

Beautiful city with picturesque photo opportunities and rich history. The old town was a stand out and very easy to walk around. The Nurnberg rail museum was excellent and well worth a visit. We found the people very friendly and the public transport was easy to navigate. Loads of German delicacies to munch on & of course good German beer to wash it down.

A very interesting historical city, much of which has been...

A very interesting historical city, much of which has been lovingly restored after devastating air raid damage in WW2. The Residence I(and its gardens) are well worth visiting, being a smaller scale version of the palaces at Versailles and Charlottenburg. Don't miss the Hofkirche while there. The Marienberg Fortress on the hill overlooking the town offers fantastic views, but is currently being extensively refurbished. It is still worth visiting though. And if you like visiting churches, you will not be disappointed here. Fantastic cuisine and wine available here. we can heartily recommend Aifach Resins and zum Stachel, the former for more contemporary cuisine and the latter for more traditional fare in traditional and historic surroundings.

The whole city is beautiful with so much history! We really loved the Rathaus square and the fountains and the Fuggerei annd the Dom. Our Hotel Ost am Ko was in the perfect location for exploring and was a real gem of a hotel! Highly recommend visiting Augsburg- has so much to see and experience. Momo’s in the Bahnhofstraße Strasse has the best Doner I have ever had!

The old medieval town centre was impressive, plenty of alleyways to explore. You need to look up - the ground floor of all these ancient buildings are often taken up with modern shops and cafes. The cathedral is impressive, but the outside is in need of attention, hence the seemingly permanent scaffolding. Liked the modern Museum of Bavarian History. Walhalla is an easy bus ride (number 5) and a pleasant walk away. Had a nice meal in sophisticated surroundings at the Hacker-Pschorr Wirtshaus, surprisingly affordable for the quality.

Our highlight was a visit to Schloss Seehof which we reached by bus, using the Bamberg card. Really informative guided tour of the restored interior of the castle and the gardens including an impressive water cascade were impressive.

I stayed in Füssen manly to go look at Neuschwanstein and the Wieskirche, but discovered the old city is gorgeous and it also has wonderful trails to hike in the surrounding areas! I would definitely come back!

The first thing I noticed upon arriving in Ingolstadt is the cleanliness of the area from the moment I stepped off the train. I had travelled from Cologne through Berlin, Dresden and Nurnberg, stopping a view nights in each place, and Ingolstadt was the best ‘first impression’ of a city I experienced. This continued throughout the 3 days I spent there. The train station is located in a leafy area next to a beautiful park and surrounded by 3 churches. The city has numerous walkways and cycle routes alongside the river and through beautiful gardens. The city is extremely peaceful and had beautiful architecture and many historic buildings and sights. You will find good coffee shops and some of the best traditional food dishes in Germany. I LOVED this place and can’t wait to return.

The town is small and industrialized.

The town is small and industrialized. There were few options close to the hotel for dining, although we were surprised with the American menu at the LookOut restaurant at the artificial wave generator at the SurfTown facility, within walking distance of the hotel.

Rothenburg is a staple.

Rothenburg is a staple. But also an instagram hotspot and tourist trap. Restaurants are expensive for the traditional, cheap food they provide. Best food and atmosphere in the "Alter Keller" restaurant. A must do, is the walk around the city wall, in a weather protected gallery on top of the wall, all around the city with best views and far enough away from the crowd.
