FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

- From $207.15 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Excellent - What previous guests thought, 2,327 reviewsEverything really!! The hotel staff are lovely and welcoming. The place is stunning and views are breathtaking, especially if you get a room with a lake / Hill view. Spotless hotel, room was very big. Food was delicious, nothing was too much for any member of staff to help you with. My family has spa treatments and said they were fabulous, the pool area was gorgeous to lounge around. The outside area to relax was beautiful. Luckily we had amazing weather. We did the whisky tour at the lakes distillery which was so good, beware a taxi ride cost 80 pounds one way! We will Def stay here again when in the UK it was amazing, and a bonus it's dog friendly so I got my dog fix as we live overseas and we're missing ours!!Guest review byLisaBermuda

The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly, always going out of their way to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The location is absolutely stunning, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, which added a magical touch to our visit. Being so close to Keswick made it incredibly convenient for exploring the area, yet the hotel itself felt like a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle. The combination of excellent service, stunning views, and a prime location made this an unforgettable stay. Highly recommended!Guest review byCarolineUnited Kingdom
- From $203.14 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very Good - What previous guests thought, 2,309 reviewsThe hotel was perfect for our one night stay. The weather was horrible so we spent some time in the very comfortable relaxing hotel lounge. Although it rained constantly we ventured out to Allan Bank, a short 6 minutes walk and also a walk along the path towards Easdale tarn. The food in the restaurant was superb. The bedroom had everything we needed for one night and the bed was very comfortable.Guest review byChrisUnited Kingdom

Visited in early October...town was humming in daytime, and reasonably busy at night. Didn't feel like holidaying out of season. Lots of outdoor shops, cafe's, pubs and cafes, all seemed very friendly. Ate in both pubs and local restaurant. Very helpful tourist Information with lots of maps etcGuest review byAllanUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The cottage was in a good location to visit other parts of the Lake District. Narrow roads but not too busy. We ate in the Cottage in the evening but visited the local pub, just a short walk away, for a pre-dinner drink. We bought some wonderful local bacon from the shop. The Shop was surprisingly well stocked. The Cottage is not in Ambleside which was a good thing as there was a Beer Festival the whole weekend we were there and Town was packed. The Cottage is in a perfect location and great for walkers.Guest review byDelythUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Traditional hotel, but clean and well decorated We were there lass that 24 hrs but found the staff to be pleasant and the food good It was a perfect stop over on the way to Scotland - but could have stayyed longerGuest review byKateUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom
