FAQs about hotels on Crete
Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine
The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.
Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.
Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.
On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.
We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

- From US$345.55 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 372 reviewsWe stayed at the hotel over the Easter week, the very beginning of the summer season, and couldn’t be more impressed with how smoothly the hotel was running! The hotel is well-designed and spacious, there are plenty of social areas for family chit chat and cute alleys for taking a walk. We loved seeing all the palm trees and hearing birds chirping throughout the day. The staff at the hotel were super friendly, without an exception, and genuinely interested in helping guests have a great time. There are two swimming pools to choose from: one for kids with slides, another one for adults, and a carefully maintained beach with lazy chairs and a beach bar. The restaurant is great and operates very efficiently, we never had to wait for more than 5 minutes to get seated, even during the peak time. And I don’t need to tell you all how amazing the Cretan cuisine is. In short, this is an absolute gem of a place to stay in!Guest review byArturasGermany
- From US$210.84 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,048 reviewsIt’s a lovely property with beautiful pools on the beach. Excellent food and very well run. We are both cat lovers and appreciated that they looked after the local cats in a feeding station. We got very friendly with a multicoloured scrawny little kit we called Gypsy. Particular thanks to Sissi who sorted out an important parcel we had left in Athens very efficiently. Shout out too to Maria our lovely cleaner and Katerina in reception. The staff are all good but these three are particularly excellent. We wished we had stayed far longerGuest review byJanNew Zealand
- From US$432.23 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 291 reviewsAll people here are very nice and caring. They have a sea water pool - actually the main pool. Very nice tennis coaches , big territory , everyone will find things to do . Very cool is that they have a free launch for kids everyday at the buffet. Also I liked a lot no need to have towel cards - towels just available everywhere, use as needed, same as water and no request on room number at breakfast- those are small things that make relaxing home atmosphere! Overall great food and generosity in everything .Guest review byIrynaUkraine

We stayed in Old Town which is an older part of Chania but is within walking distance of of the port, shopping and restaurants. We took private tours to the White Mountains and to Sougia (the most southern part of Crete), which I recommend, to see ancient Greek ruins and Roman tombs. Also we took a walking tour around Old Town to become familiar with the surrounding local favorites. We visited a local farmer's market for cheese, fruit and olives. Everyone was very nice and welcoming.Guest review byLindaUnited States - 10.0

Heraklio is perfect for those who want to go sightseeing rather than only beach. It is a bustling city with an excellent museum and good transport links. The bus timetables aren't the easiest to understand and if you want to really explore Crete you may wish to consider renting a car.Guest review byJuneUnited Kingdom - 10.0

As it’s built into the mountains, reasonable mobility is desirable, however it is disable friendly and the taxis are cheap, On site there are lots of steps and inclines to the facilities, as well as lifts, but I’m sure a persons needs could be accommodated to all the pools and restaurants. I’m 71 and managed to walk into town/star beach ok, enjoyed the exercise tbh! Overall the hotel is brilliant for families with children of all ages. I would go back for sure! The town is superb, so much choice for eating/drinking out, shopping good, usual touristy stuff! People are friendly and very helpful.Guest review bySue moUnited Kingdom - 10.0
We loved Agios Nicolaos.
We loved Agios Nicolaos. It’s a bustling port town but still small enough around the port area to be lovely. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. We did a boat trip to Spinalonga, which was excellent. We also took a cab to visit Plaka and Elounda and another to Kritsa the following day.Guest review byRosemaryAustralia - 10.0

Kissamos offered us a wonderful mix of relaxation and local charm. The nightlife was a pleasant surprise, with cozy bars and lively tavernas where we enjoyed delicious food and drinks. Evening walks through the town square and the nearby streets filled with local shops and traditional products were some of the highlights of our stay. It's a great place for couples looking for a laid-back yet authentic Cretan experience.Guest review byKonstantinosGreece - 8.0

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.Guest review byAMELIAUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Palaiochora is a little piece of Paradise. Fantastic beaches , food and scenery. We hired a car and drove around the area, a little scary as the roads in the mountains are rather challenging. We hope to return to this very romantic location some day .Guest review byMAIREADIreland - 8.0

lovely holiday spot, plenty of shops and restaurants, everyone extremely friendly and helpful. About an hour from airport, went to spinalonga and did a few walks, also did the 4 hour train ride which was lovely to see mountains, bit of history etc, wasnt too hot. Both of the bays were good and safe for swimming - one of them a bit pebbly getting in, the other was fine. Supermarkets well stocked. Elounda is flat so easy for walking although pavements a little bumpy. All very accessible and walkableGuest review byAnonymous
