I don't think we have ever eaten as well on a short city break as we did in Dubrovnik. The cafes, restaurants and bars were excellent. We particularly loved the Carmen Trattoria. I would recommend a trip on the cable car for superb views of the city, coast and mountains and a walk around the city walls is a 'must do'. We ended a cruise in Split. It's definitely worth seeing. Book a walking tour and a golf cart tour... you'll see totally different things. Two days exploring town is plenty, but it would have been fun to take a couple of excursions to other island attractions that our cruise didn't cover. We were there the first week of October, so it was sunny during the day and chilly in the evening, very nice. Also much less crowded (though still bustling) than in the summer months. I can't say that we had a great meal, other than pizza at Bokamorra, which had a nice vibe and some of the best pizza ever (get the truffle and mushroom). Stay at the Hotel Ambasador for a luxury experience and spectacular views of the entire city and harbor. Friends stayed at one of the hotels in the palace and, while quaint, it was more like a place we'd have stayed at in our college years. Very nice town with great restaurants and bars overlooking the harbour. Only 7 mins taxi ride from Dubrovnik airport. Boat rides into Dubrovnik take around 50 mins, local bus takes about the same time. Nice places within easy walking distance for a swim in the sea. We used Mlini for a night before flying out of Dubrovnik Airport. We started our Croatia holiday in Split, then did a Bike and Boat through the islands, ending up in Dubrovnik. Lovely and very interesting island with amazing beaches nearby, great biking opportunities, historic places to visit, wonderful restaurants, friendly people and amazing sites around every bend. We stayed in the old town, in a building built around 1400, and explored from there.
