Verona is like a mini Florence with beautiful churches and amazing history without the extreme crowds, high prices and extreme touristy feel. It was much easier to get around in, less hectic and overall far friendlier and more fun to visit. The food there was better too and less expensive, more local feeling rather then one big tourist trap. Although I spent most of my time in Venice, I enjoyed the casual walkable surroundings. Good coffee shops and restaurants close by. The bus into Venice took 10 minutes and ran often. Lovely location, easy access by road, bus or ferry. Great place to be based in order to explore other towns on Lake Garda. Very good ferry service. The old town of Sirmione is very picturesque, lots of restaurants and shops. Still very busy when we visited in early October and would be even more so in the summer months, quieter in the evenings when day trippers have gone.
