Siracusa is an interesting and varied city.
Siracusa is an interesting and varied city. Historically and culturally there are lots to see and explore particularly in the old town area of Ortigia but also at the archaeological park. If you like eating out the variety and quality of restaurants is exceptional and if you like seafood you will not be disappointed! The prices were also very reasonable and you can eat lunch in the street food area of Ortigia ridiculously cheaply but with restaurant quality. A holiday location for adults though or maybe families with older, late teens maybe or older, children as there are really no beaches worth speaking of where younger children could play or swim safely. Ragusa has good infrastructure for a holiday - insofar as there are cafés and restaurants at various price points and plenty of baroque buildings, particularly in Ibla, that make it a very attractive place to stay (this was our second visit). It is handily placed for day trips to the other cities of Southern Baroque Sicily (Scicli, Modica, Noto and Syracusa) but it should be remembered that Sicily is a huge island and therefore Ragusa is by no means a convenient jumping off point for cities in the North (Taormina, Palermo etc.) The island has so much to commend it that it would be daft to try and tick everything off during a single visit in any case. There isn’t much to see in Avola but the beach is great (golden sand) so it’s a good location for relaxing. Great seafood restaurants and our favourite was Portomatto. This is a special, classy restaurant with very reasonable prices. Great for both seafood and high quality pizza. Modica is a very old town on South-east Sicily, quite important for her history and baroque architecture. Getting around is easy, if you like to walk a lot! There are a lot of stairs and climbings to get to Modica Alta, but it's worth. Food is very good and there are still restaurants with good prices. From Modica you can reach the beach in half an hour by car, and you can also visit several good natural spots (like Riserva Naturale di Pantalica, Cavagrande, Vendicari) just driving one/two hours. It is quite a small seaside town so I would imagine it is very crowded very quickly! Scala steps okay but better seen when decorated. Official followed us around the old gaol, very intimidating! Did they think we were going to damage something? Reasonable buses around town, but very poor getting away. We were given false information about the bus to leave, others didn't arrive. Had to get an expensive taxi. Beautiful beach and cliffs around the town. Unfortunately not many restaurants and option to eat. The litters are on the beach and no one cares there.
