Wonderful small inn in Sasayama, a not very touristy castle town in the hills in Hyogo. I wanted to visit because it is a pottery area but could not find suitable accommodation near the potteries which are about 5km by road from JR Kusano. You still can buy lots of ceramics in Sasayama though, and there are a studio or two but no climbing kilns etc. Anyway, I really liked Sasayama. Its a small town that receives visitors at weekends, mainly domestic visitors, and has a lot of wonderful traditional house accommodations, of which Oito is one. It is an old shop in Kawaramachi Merchant Street that was converted into a spacious cafe with two rooms. I really love the aesthetics of the place, very traditional building stripped back and renovated, with lots of dark wood handmade furniture and carefully chosen accessories, lots of ceramics from all over Japan. I had the cheaper room above the cafe, so you have to go up a small stair and you can hear the cafe but if did not bother me much since the cafe was relatively quiet, and opened from about 9.00-17.00. Room was huge, I could look down Kawaramachi from my bed, and it was so comfortable and beautiful. Staff were lovely too, they gave me so many nice tips and rented a bicycle which was great for cycling all over Sasayama which is a bit spread out. The number of cafes and concept stores for such a small rural town is astonishing.

Amazing hotel, very spacious room and very design, with fantastic view on the harbor. The room is close walk distance to the harbor and any restaurants if you don’t fancy have a dinner at the hotel restaurant itself on the top. The service of the hotel is fantastic, helping you to get your luggages down to the ground floor. The amenities are great as well: they will provide with coffee pods from Nespresso and water bottles. Extra beauty products are available in the room.

Our stay was genuinely enjoyable thanks to a mix of thoughtful amenities and charming design. - The location was incredibly convenient - perfect for exploring the area and just a short walk to the nearby onsen. - The building itself has a cool heritage vibe, beautifully maintained and full of character. - Our room was both private and spacious, offering a level of comfort that made it easy to relax - Parking was a breeze: all-day access for just 1000 yen, and the hotel even arranged pickup and drop-off from the carpark. - The staff were fantastic - friendly and proactive. They helped us arrange luggage delivery to our next hotel, which made our travel much smoother.

Kobe offers much to see and do.

Kobe offers much to see and do. More days there could easily be filled with worthwhile adventures. Historical and environmental environments are very nice. It is also a bit more off the beaten track of tourist traffic except for Himeji Castle, which is spectacular. Transportation and shopping and dining offerings are excellent. The Maya Ropeway is fun and hiking options on the mountain beautiful. The waterfront area offers many historical and recreational options. The Port of Kobe Tower is worth the visit and has a variety of attractions.

After staying in Kyoto, it was refreshing to stay in a smaller, quieter city for a couple of days. Himeji, had ample malls and restaurants to satisfy the needs of all tourists and yet has a nice small city feel. We saw the castle in the afternoon, and didn't encounter large crowds. The Koko-en Garden was relatively quiet when we saw it in the morning.

Kinosaki onsen is a charming small town.

Kinosaki onsen is a charming small town. Most of the tourists were Japanese who come to the hot springs. Most people are dressed in traditional yukatas and walk around the town in them and wooden sandals. We also took a short train ride to Takeno Beach a beautiful beach on the sea of Japan.

Amagasaki is a great 'real' town so close to Osaka, but with its own character. We saw a diverse mix of people from all walks of life. Working class, business people, skateboarders, old people playing ukelele in the park. There is a nice old shopping street which is not to be missed. Some good old 'Showa' era coffee shops. We didn't get to do half the things we planned. Will be back!

I visited the theme park Nijigen No Morii with Naruto and Dragonquest Island and both was amazing. Ill definitely come Back to the Park. It's a bit tricky to get around with the local (limited) buses as there run only about once every hour so a rental car ist the better option. From Iwaya Port theres a Shuttle bus to Nijigen No Morii and the hello Kitty sites, it's free and stops on a couple of sites along the route. The Shuttle operates from 10am to 9pm.

Located in Hyogo Prefecture along the Seto Inland Sea,...

Located in Hyogo Prefecture along the Seto Inland Sea, Akashi is a charming coastal city known for its outstanding seafood and relaxed atmosphere. While it may not be as famous as nearby Kobe or Osaka, Akashi offers a deliciously authentic experience that’s hard to beat. One of the city’s signature dishes is Akashiyaki—soft, egg-rich dumplings filled with tender octopus. Unlike Osaka’s takoyaki, Akashiyaki is gently dipped in warm dashi broth, highlighting the freshness of the seafood. Akashi is especially known for its high-quality octopus (madako). Thanks to the area’s fast tidal currents, the octopus here grows firm and flavorful, making it a prized ingredient across Japan. Local fish markets also showcase an incredible selection of fresh anago (conger eel) and Akashi-dai (sea bream), straight from the surrounding waters. Whether you enjoy sushi, grilled fish, or something uniquely local, Akashi will leave you more than satisfied. It’s the perfect spot for travelers who want to explore Japan’s culinary diversity beyond the big cities. Discover Akashi—where the sea meets tradition, and every bite tells a story.

Kobe being a little smaller than Kyoto and Osaka, seems a little more relaxed. It is close enough to Osaka and Hiroshima to do a day trip and has a lot of unexpected surprises, like waterfalls located 15 minutes walk behind San Kobe station. There are also a number of Ropeways and Cable Cars that take you up to the hiking trails in the mountains behind Kobe. The waterfront area is also very interesting, with an earthquake museum, which details the restoration of the Kobe Harbour after an earthquake, in just 2 years. There is also a nightly light and water show near the Kobe Tower.
