- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 64 reviewsWe stayed here as a base for Koyasan, as we couldn’t get accommodation for five up on the mountain. We had a hire car. The road from Koyasan down here is extremely narrow and windy - it will take you half an hour, and you will want to be a confident driver on narrow mountain roads. We lived in fear that we would meet an oncoming vehicle in one of the insanely narrow stretches, but never did, thankfully. They have a restaurant on site which we recommend you use - there is nowhere else to eat within a large distance, and almost all the restaurants in Koyasan are closed in the evening. We had breakfast there which was fantastic - though a little too traditionally Japanese for our fussy teenage son’s taste. The accommodation is in a lovely quiet valley - it’s a beautiful spot. Our cabin was spacious and had good cooking facilities (though we didn’t use them). The receptionist spoke enough English to get us booked in without recourse to Google Translate. There was no wifi in our cabin - but amazingly enough there was phone reception, despite being in a deep valley in the middle of nowhere. There may be Wifi in reception but we didn’t explore this. We used the private onsen in our cabin - basically a very large stone bath that you fill from hot and cold taps to whatever temperature you want. Very pleasant. The hotel seems to offer a shuttle service to Koyasan - we didn’t use it but overheard other guests who had used it.Guest review byPaulAustralia
- From US$141.85 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 291 reviewsThe hotel is about 20 min walk from the train station but they have a free shuttle which made it perfectly convenient. It was absolutely worth being slightly further away as the hotel is located on a small cove which feels like you have private access to the sea and gives beautiful views from the rooms! There is an indoor and outdoor onsen (natural hot spring baths) both with lovely views and a comfortable temperature, with complimentary amenities. We had breakfast and one dinner at the hotel and everything was delicious, generous portions with attention given to seasonal and local produce. They were also able to cater to our dietary requirements (pescatarian and scallop allergy) well. At one point one of our party suffered a burn (NOT the hotel’s fault) and the staff were so helpful in providing us what we needed and were very kind.Guest review byMayuUnited Kingdom
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,721 reviewsThe warmth and openness of the monks and staff, the clean and elegant interiors found in the entire property, delicious shojin ryori beautifully presented in the room, purposeful guided meditation in a beautiful hall, the ceremonies with the strong and beautiful voices of the monks - all of these combined made for an unforgettable stay at Ekoin. Meeting Nori, Se Shiu, and all the other monks was one of the highlights of our trip; they made us feel really welcome anytime we met and were happy to answer our questions with insight and thoughtfulness, making it look easy when in fact they were always busy with keeping things in order. They also guide guests during the Okunoin Cemetery night tours and imbue it with a lot of meaning.Guest review byChristinaPhilippines
- From US$276.23 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,829 reviewsIt feels like time froze at this hotel and it’s so fun. We had a Japanese-style room at the top floor, overlooking the ocean and that view is really the highlight, I could just stare at it all day. The staff were kind and helpful, the cave onsen were brilliant and somehow not crowded. We had easy parking right next to our building. Having a car allowed us to go out for dinners, otherwise I think this might be difficult if you only rely on the hotel’s transport. Oh and that random escalator system that takes you to the top of the hill (great views) is so random.Guest review byZsuzsannaDenmark
- From US$134.38 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 448 reviewsComing from Kansai airport this was the best traditional indulgence of Japan we could have wished for!! Just about an hour away from the airport we got immediately indulged with a traditional Japanese experience. A seaside view room really is a seaside view and Kada is an authentic Fishery town. The staff is so friendly and helpful it's heartwarming. The traditional food is an experience by itself for dinner and especially breakfast.Guest review byFokkemaNetherlands

The scenic mountains near the city offers stunning sunset views. The Sakura were in full bloom. There are several parks around the city, and the impressive Wakayama castle. The hotel (Candeo Hotels Nankai) is great value - fantastic river views, rooftop onsen that you can enjoy the sunset. And right at the Wakayama Station. Good dining options around the hotel too.Guest review byKwokSingapore - 10.0

We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.Guest review byAndrew - 10.0

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.Guest review byDimitraJapan - 10.0

Hongu, Watarase, Kawayu & the surrounding area is hands down one of THE almighty best in Japan — and Japan has lots of amazing places. it's very easy to spend 3 days or more based out of this area & then driving around to amazing waterfalls, ravines, hot springs, cultural spots, mountain vistas, abandoned elementary school, etc. etc. unbeaten japan can take you there so do not hesitate to reach out.Guest review bylawrence of osakaJapan - 10.0

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.Guest review byAnonymousAustralia - 8.0

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10.0

This is a very peaceful little town on the southeast coast of Kii Peninsula. The residents and store clerks are mostly senior citizens but they are polite and pleasant to meet. It’s the gateway to the Nashi area and the famous Kumano Kodo historical trail. You can also rent a bike at the Information Center next to the JR Kii Katsuura Station to quickly circle around town.Guest review byKuangYuTaiwan - 8.0

Wakayama has a wonderful castle and museum that was sparsely attended. It was a nice change to have the place to yourself so you could take your time at the exhibits. We chose to come here as the city was close to Kansai Airport for our return flight. We did not explore the regional trails which I believe are wonderful. If only visiting the city, a stay of 2 days is sufficient.Guest review byBlatchfordAustralia
