I truly enjoyed my stay at Chipatso! I originally planned to spend just one week in Cape Maclear, but I ended up staying for eight weeks. The lodge is located in a peaceful spot a little away from the lake, which creates a calm and relaxed atmosphere – perfect for escaping the busier parts of town. That said, the lake is still just a short walk away, so you can easily enjoy the beach and the water whenever you like. The vibe at Chipatso is super laid-back and family-like, and you feel welcome right from the start. The rooms are clean, cozy, and very creatively designed, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. What made the experience truly special were the people: the lovely mamas who live on the property are so warm and kind, and the kids are curious and always up for some fun. The rest of the Chipatso team is amazing – friendly, helpful, and always there when you need something, whether it's arranging transportation to your next destination or helping you organize an activity. And what makes Chipatso truly unique is that it’s not just a lodge – it’s also a community-based organization with a meaningful mission. They run an education and nutrition program, and support single mothers in the area. If you're interested, don’t miss the guided tour with Kim, where he shares the inspiring story behind the organization and the important work they’re doing. Also, don’t miss the sunset hike to the baobab tree with Ilia – it’s absolutely worth it! And make sure to try the chicken schnitzel – so good. Thank you so much for this amazing time! Sound of lake all the time. Everyday you see people doing their everyday stuff in the lake. You can feel the village vibe. Sunsets are beautiful.

Butterfly is a hidden gem. The room was cosy and quirky. The lake views were a delight and I was so comfortable. The bar and deck was probably my most favourite thing. It’s such a beautiful setting and a great place to meet fellow travellers and volunteers while watching fishermen drift pass in their dug outs.

We had a fantastic stay at Mgoza lodge. The room was spacious and clean. The bar/restaurant and garden areas are great places to relax and enjoy the stunning view of lake Malawi, as well as talk to other guests. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. The food was delicious. The local community around the lodge are friendly. There was often electricity cuts (not through the fault of the lodge) so a torch and battery bank was useful to have. We only wished we could have stayed longer!

Great location (on the lake). Amazingly friendly catering staff; went completely off-menu to source and prepare authentic "local" vegetarian food for me; and kept doing it for the whole week. Super helpful operations team were always willing to try to fix problems as they occurred (eg. bad wifi); can't blame them for others' mistakes!

Excellent beach and great swimming pool. New rooms are very nice.
