FAQs about hotels in Norte Region
The Essence of Portugal
With fabulous beaches stretching from Caminha by the Spanish border to just south of Espinho, Portugal’s Norte region is known for beautiful scenery and historic cities.
Most Norte hotels on Booking.com are in its UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital Porto (or Oporto). Attractively spread over hills, it has wine cellars storing port from the Douro River Valley vineyards upstream.
Voted one of Portugal’s most liveable cities, Vila Real has the Mateus house overlooking a peaceful pond. Guimarães boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre and is known as the ‘birthplace of the Portugal’. Its stately castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança are well worth a visit.
Bragança itself is by Montesinho Natural Park in north-east Norte, and a keep remains from its former castle. Chaves also has a castle keep and a Roman stone bridge, but unlike Braga, it no longer has remains of its Roman baths, erected over hot springs. Braga’s crowning glory is the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, set high in hills, with a wonderful staircase and garden overlooking the city.
South of Galicia is the beautiful Peneda-Gerês area, Portugal’s only national park, and to its west is Viana do Castelo with its Norte beach hotels set on Blue Flag beaches. Also noteworthy is impressive Basilica de Santa Luzia, surveying the riverfront town below.

- From US$1,147.86 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 250 reviewsThe service has been consistent over the years, the team really does love their work and their job, you can tell from the passion and warmth they serve. Louis - one of the OG sommeliers/manager and his colleague were fantastic - trying to recreate the best steak I've had at their property over 3 years ago. We say that time changes everyone, but I'm so glad to see that Six Senses remains exceptionally well run ~ please don't ever change that part! Also had a really enjoyable and dare I say life altering Osteopath Massage session - learnt a lot from my body and Lorenzo really did make my spine feel looser. Thank you!Guest review byCarolineHong Kong
- From US$185.51 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 232 reviewsA true paradise in the nature, in a super stylish cabins, and most amazing hosts. Every detail warmed the heart, you enter the bungalow and bottle of whine with a cake is waiting for you, 10minutes after it stars raining, hosts nocks at your doors with sturdy umbrellas. We were extremely unlucky with a weather, but cabin was so beautiful, surrounded by the wonderful nature, local cat visited us and stayed with us for the whole night and we used inside pool with an amazing view to the hills, so we were not even sorry that we couldn’t get outside for 3days:)Guest review byMigleLuxembourg
- From US$92.87 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 2,896 reviewsThe location is perfect, surrounded by hills and with a view to the river. It offers the perfect nature getaway with comfort. The spa has two swimming pools, one adults only. The room was spotless and the cleaning team, restaurant staff and receptionists were exceptional. The breakfast was also very good from fresh fruits and bread, to good Portuguese cheese, and some homemade cakes and cookies. Also English breakfast available. The exterior playground was maintained and had a sand box. My only suggestion would be a room for children to play.Guest review bySofiaUnited Kingdom

Porto was a charming city, the views from the historic part of town were beautiful. There were lots of places to explore, around Porto if you rented a car or went on tours. there were also lots of interesting buildings and churches and museums to visit as well as some great food. Just beware the slippery cobblestones! It was an easy city to walk around, a fun thing to do was rent a bicycle and cycle along the coast. Going further on the bike would also have been quite a fun adventure.Guest review bySSingapore - 8.0

The views across the river Dourro to Porto are wonderful, especially at night. A good choice of river cruises are easily accessible and the Port houses are a great attraction. Plenty of good, reasonably priced restaurants and Porto is 5 minutes away across the foot bridge. It's worth noting, however, that both Villa Nova Da Gaia and Porto, although beautiful, have very steep hills.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A small city north of Porto, with a lot of history and attractions. Plenty of shops, cafes, old churches, and restaurants, but the bar scene is lacking. There are many senior citizens here, since it's one of the more affordable and lovable parts of Portugal. I like kebab restaurants, but otherwise cooked for myself in hostel kitchens.Guest review byKyleUnited States - 10.0

Intertesting port town with a huge monastery on top of a hill. Loved the restaurants and it is easy to drive to other areas of Northern Portugal from there. The weather was comfortable, too. Be sure to bring Euros for tram ride to monastery. We went there to rest and relax between our Spain and Portugal tours.Guest review byAnonymous - 6.0

This small city was an absolute gem - stunning ancient squares and streets filled with lovely cafes and restaurants, altogether not as touristy as it could have been and very easy to walk around. We dined in two of the main squares with traditional Portuguese cuisine and inexpensive wines, and lovely ice cream outlets. We took the cablecar up the hillside and walked back down. We visited the Ducal palace (fantastic reconstruction) and castle (ruin). We could easily have spent a week here relaxing and taking in the atmosphere. And very easy to reach from Oporto.Guest review byTraceyUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples.
Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples. Other beaches at Ofir and Apulia excellent. Limited supply of restaurants and limitless supply of banks!!! Surprised by the obvious wealth amongst the Portuguese people with holiday homes here. Very few estrangers. Not for sailors. Good for families. Some surprising sculptures dotted around the esplanade from 1997 one in particular near the San Lorenca fort at Esponsende.Guest review byRogerIreland - 10.0
This place gets a well-deserved 5 stars—no doubt about it!
This place gets a well-deserved 5 stars—no doubt about it! From the moment we walked in, it felt warm, cozy, and totally like home. It’s huge, sparkling clean, and honestly… it looks even better than in the photos (and that’s saying something!). Usually with apartments that look this good, you think: “Yeah right, too good to be true.” But nope—this one actually turned out to be better than too good! It’s got everything. And I mean everything: coffee machine, iron, washing machine, dishwasher… you name it, it’s there—and all in tip-top shape. We were just the two of us, but there’s more than enough space for 4 or even 6 people to hang out comfortably. And the view… wow. Just wow. Need a room with a view? Look no further—this is the one!Guest review byArjenNetherlands - 10.0

Vila do Conde is a charming town that is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of a large city, if that is what you are used to, or looking to get away from. There are many good restaurants in the area. We hired a car for the duration of our stay as we wanted to travel further afield whilst adding stops along the way and choosing the most scenic routes.Guest review byRujero
