The breakfast was the tastiest and most eye-pleasing meal I had in my entire 2 weeks-trip. The clam soup was so fresh. The host helped to call the previous hotel I stayed because I left my adaptor & mobile charger there. He was kind to also let me use his charger that night. The room was warm in chilly autumn night and I had a good sleep after soaking in hot bath. It was rainy when I arrived and left the ryokan but because of the hospitality I received, I wished I could have stayed there for another night or 2.

In this ever changing, chaotic and even crazy world, I admire a well-run family business (small or large) which passes on from generation to generation, like the Tanakaya (since 1911). My wife and I have one of the five larger rooms with superb views of the Japanese garden with architectural and water features (charming with the new snow cover). The included Kaiseki dinner (delicious, sumptuous, but not too elaborate or overly filling) and breakfast are served not in our room but in a separate and private dinner room, which we like. The clear-water onsen is not huge and indoor only, but has full glass panels facing a small bamboo grove in the garden. Old-fashioned warm and attentive service attitudes prevailed. A mature lady of the 4th generation greeted us when we arrived, another of the 5th generation briefed us, and a third lady was assigned to take us to our room, serve us dinner and breakfast and prepare our beddings. All three of them waited for us when we checked out, and followed our small shuttle bus as it drove out to the parking lot and onto the road to wave us goodbye despite the snow and cold weather. We saw members of the 6th generation chatting and playing in the lounge just before dinner the evening before, while we were viewing the manuscripts and books of a poet (also a member of the family) in a display room near the reception, I wish the traditions of excellence and service of this small ryokan (and many others) will continue to be passed on to the next generations.

The best thing about this place is the people. Wonderful family is running this small cozy Inn along the road to Shirakawa-go from Toyama. We could not find affordable Inn in Shirakawa-go, so we chose this one just 40 minutes away. Very nice rooms decorated with good taste and comfortable. Toilet and sink are available in the room and the traditional bath separately for men and women is located downstairs. It was interesting to try it. Very helpful and friendly family members were willing to communicate and give us advice. And great meals were served with care and in a traditional way. We enjoyed our one night stay there a lot. The shuttle driver picking g us up from the local train station and also dropping off / picking up for dinner was incredible.

Rooms are air-conditioned with a flat-screen TV, refrigerator and an en suite bathroom. Bath towels and bath amenities are provided. Love the place and the huge dinner and breakfast! It was a veritable feast. The futon beds were very comfortable too. We enjoyed the onsen very much. In addition, we had our own private toilet and bathroom. Would highly recommend this place.

Located in the Gokayama hot-spring area, Gokasanso offers Japanese and Western-style accommodations with a flat-screen TV. Guests can relax in the indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and wear Japanese Yukata robes. Nice service, and they have hot spring also. If you stay in gokayama, I recommend you should have dinner in booked hotel, becuz there is no restaurant open until 3pm...
